Nurturing Your Toddler's Desire to "Do It Myself"

If you have a toddler or preschooler, you are probably all too familiar with the refrain “I do it myself!” Jessica Lahner, Ph. D., a child development expert from the Psychology Department at Carroll University, explains that this is a healthy sign because it “helps develop a sense of competence and self-esteem.”

She recently joined Real 6 Milwaukee on air to explain how parents can support their children in this drive for independence, as well as some of her favorite products to do so, including our very own Original Learning Tower.

Dr. Lahner emphasizes that parents are children’s primary teacher, not only about the world, but about themselves. Therefore, by allowing them to do things on their own, parents are sending the message that, “Hey, you’re a competent little human who can get things done on your own.”

One of the top principles of nurturing independence in children is providing an environment that allows them to be involved. Dr. Maria Montessori calls this the “prepared environment.”

We were especially excited to learn that Dr. Lahner owns an Original Learning Tower, calling it, “hands-down one of my top five favorite products” for nurturing competence and independence. She loves using it to involve her children in meal prep, baking, washing dishes, and washing vegetables. “They’re in the action of the kitchen,” she says.

Having owned her Learning Tower for seven years, Dr. Lahner also emphasizes that the Original Learning Tower is well worth the price. “You will get years out of it,” she says.
